Message from the Dean

The Faculty of Business and Management (FOBM) at the University of Balamand currently has students taking courses in Business, Management, Economics, and Tourism and Hotel Management. Local and regional demands for these disciplines made FOBM one of the fastest growing Faculties in the University. FOBM has its eyes set on being "The" Business School of Lebanon and the Middle East. The FOBM has short and long term goals adapting to the demands of today and the promising prospects of tomorrow. Faculty members enjoy a diverse range of experiences covering industry and academia. The Faculty is known for having small classes, close interaction between students and faculty members who practice an open-door policy and know students on a first-name basis.
The Faculty is working on a number of initiatives:
  • Broadening the recruitment process to include more international students.
  • Recruiting more qualified professors with internationally recognized degrees.
  • Introducing more majors, concentrations and up-to-date courses.
  • Being a center for business research.
  • Initiating strong partnerships with Lebanese and Arab industries.
  • Establishing partnerships with other high-ranked universities in the US, Europe and neighboring countries.
  • Setting-up exchange programs with universities in Europe, Canada, and the United States.
  • Elevating the level of cooperation with other Lebanese academic institutions and universities.
  • Establishing a regular internal review process.
  • Achieving accreditation from the States or Europe in the long run.
Based on current trends, it is expected that over the next three years the number of undergraduate students will reach more than 500 and the number of graduate students will reach 150. The MBA program is continuously strengthened, catering both to recent B.A. graduates as well as to professionals who have been in the workplace for some time. The FOBM is keen on increasing faculty and enrollment and on managing growth in a way that maintains academic standards and responds to emerging needs. In particular, the Faculty takes into consideration new trends in the business world which are driven by technology and globalization, and by regional changes opening new job market opportunities locally and regionally. Accordingly, the Faculty is continuously modifying and streamlining its curricula and course offerings at the graduate and undergraduate levels, integrating research, and embedding case studies as a major feature of its academic programs.
The diverse nature of electives makes the offering appealing to students from outside the Faculty of Business and Management. Students from the Faculty of Engineering take some of their electives at FOBM, thus enabling them to obtain the breadth needed for the effective practice of their profession.
Student-professor cooperation and intellectual interaction is promoted through teaching and research assistant positions allowing MBA students to build their experience.
The FOBM has a plan for strengthening its relation with the business community by:
  1. involving it in the University's activities,
  2. setting-up presentations and seminars by business leaders,
  3. organizing internships of students with companies,
  4. providing short term training workshops, and
  5. encouraging consulting opportunities.
Tourism and Hotel Management (THM) is a popular and growing field of study. The Hospitality industry in Lebanon has seen a great revival in the past few years, hence, a greater need for specialists in the Tourism and Hotel sectors. The University of Balamand has responded to this new market demand, by opening the School of Tourism and Hotel Management, in 1999, having ultra-modern facilities. Therefore, the degree students earn is a Bachelor of Business Administration, with a major in Tourism and Hotel Management. Graduates of such program are equipped to function effectively in the work field or to pursue higher studies.
Recently, the THM curriculum has undergone an extensive reform, increasing the number of credits to 98 based on benchmarking studies, strengthening the core courses with a host of Business Administration and Hospitality courses, and making field training mandatory. The THM facilities provide students with practical hands-on experience:
  • A Hospitality library & a computer laboratory with Internet access and Hospitality software packages, helping our students with research.
  • Two Kitchen Laboratories for Food Production updated with state-of-the-art equipment, and a Restaurant (65 seats) for practical Service experience.>
  • A fully-furnished Suite for Housekeeping experience.
  • An Auditorium (Jacobo Auditorium), with a seating capacity of 100, where seminars and workshops are held.
THM students undergo two mandatory summer internships (1000 hours) in the best 5-star hotels, after which the majority of them secure permanent jobs.
