University of Balamand > Institutional Accreditation > ACQUIN

             University of Balamand

The University of Balamand has taken two years ago a major step towards institutional accreditation. Having quite a large number of majors and offering several degrees in French as the main language of instruction, UOB decided to seek European accreditation, specifically to the Germany-based “Accreditation, Certification and Quality Assurance Institute” (ACQUIN) - a member in the following international networks: the European Network for Quality Assurance (ENQA), the European University Association (EUA), the Central Eastern European Network for Quality Assurance (CEEN), the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education (INQAAHE), and the Arab Quality Assurance and Accreditation Network (ARQAANE). Nowadays ACQUIN is an association of over 160 higher education institutions from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary and the United States of America.

The scope of applying to ACQUIN was envisaged by President Dr. Elie Salem actually who signed the contract with this commission on June 05, 2013. An eight -member Steering Committee for ACQUIN accreditation has been formed at UOB and includes Dr. Walid Moubayed, Fr. Dr. Antoine Melki, Dr. Elie Karam, Dr. Mohamad Khaldi, Mr. Imad Rubeiz, Dr. Mira El Chaar, Dr. Hanna Al Nakat, and Dr. Daniel Ayuch.

After submitting the final Self-Study Assessment Report (UOBSAR) in December 2014, UOB has proudly hosted the ACQUIN Visit Team of Experts that came from Germany between April 27 and 30, 2015 to conduct their on-site evaluation.  The accreditation decision is scheduled for September 2015. The team was constituted of:

  • Ms. Marion Moser, ACQUIN’s Deputy Managing Director,
  • Professor Dr. Hans Gruber, a professor of Educational Science in the University Regensburg,
  • Professor Dr. Heinrich Kill, a professor of Transportation Systems Design and a former president of the University of Applied Sciences, Erfurt,
  • Professor Dr. Johann Schneider, a professor of Sociology and a former rector and vice-rector of the University of Applied Sciences, Frankfurt,
  • Mr. Christoph Affeld, a PhD student in Political Sciences at the University Osnabrueck.

As part of their evaluation, the team has conducted a tour of the Main Campus and its facilities, and held a series of meetings at all levels of the UOB community: a representative of His Beatitude Patriarch John X our Chairman of the Board of Trustees, members of the BOT, the President, Vice-Presidents, Deans, academic and administrative Directors, Research Council, all levels of the academic and administrative staff, students, as well as stakeholders from the community.
