On Thursday, October 14th, 2021, within the scope of the Sustainable Wastewater Treatment for Hospitals / SWaTH project, the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Balamand hosted a celebration of Erasmus Days 2021. SWaTH is a 3-year project and co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union. This capacity building project is led by the University of Balamand and focus on sustainable wastewater treatment. The project brings together 11 organizations from four European countries (France, Sweden, Finland, Spain) and Lebanon (Lebanese University, Lebanese American University, the Holy Spirit University of Kaslik, Notre Dame University). The project aims to evaluate the social and environmental impacts of wastewater treatment through life cycle analysis studies, transfer of knowledge from European to Lebanese partners, and form skilled environmental and chemical engineers. As a result, the Lebanese partners will help Lebanese stakeholders to select the best wastewater treatment technology aimed at removing problematic particles or compounds rather than diluting it with residential wastewater streams. At least 35 students and 85 faculty members from Lebanese universities will be trained in the framework of this project in EU universities.

 

This was the first time since the inception of the Erasmus Days Celebration in 2017 that such a celebration is held in Lebanon. The Erasmus Days celebration, which was held at the UOB’s main campus in Koura, attracted more than 80 high school students who all participated in a series of interactive sessions, lectures, games, and competitions all focused on waste management.

 

In his welcoming address, UOB Vice President for Internationalization and Engagement and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Professor Rami Abboud underlined the university’s commitment to remaining a beacon of hope in desperate times. He emphasized the role of programs such as Erasmus in bringing to world together to work towards the collective good. He also commended the efforts of the SWaTH project team underlining the importance of the issue of wastewater management. Professor Abboud also welcomed the guests who partner in the SWaTH project from Lebanon and Europe.

 

In turn, the Coordinator of the National Erasmus+ Office Lebanon, Dr. Aref Alsoufi highlighted the impact that Erasmus+ projects have had over the years stressing the long history of successful collaboration with the University of Balamand. He commended the efforts of the SWaTH team.

 

Dr. Makram El Bachawati, SWaTH Project Manager and Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering at UOB, spoke about the SWaTH Project. Dr. El Bachawati highlighted the aims and goals of the project, acknowledged the efforts of the Lebanese Red Cross volunteers, recognized the cooperation of the Lebanese ministry of public health, and connected the project with the central theme of the day “wastewater management”.

 

Following the opening session, SWaTH Project partners gave brief presentations during what was labeled as a “concept session”. The session aimed to familiarize the audience with the different aspects of wastewater management and its different areas of impact. This was followed by a series of lively activities throughout the Faculty of Engineering buildings. These activities included lab tours, photo ops, competitions, and other activities all facilitated by student volunteers from the university. The event was concluded with a quiz competition focused on the knowledge acquired throughout the day.

 

 

 

ضمن اطار مشروع SWaTH للمعالجة المستدامة لمياه الصرف الصحي للمستشفيات، نظمت كلية الهندسة في جامعة البلمند، يوم الخميس الواقع في  ١٤ تشرين الاول ٢٠٢١، يوماً توعوياً ضمن فعاليات أيام إيراسموس 2021.(ErasmusDays 2021)  SWaTH هو مشروع بناء قدرات مدته ثلاث سنوات وبتمويل مشترك بواسطة برنامج  Erasmus+ التابع للاتحاد الأوروبي. هذا المشروع بقيادة جامعة البلمند ويجمع 6 مؤسسات تقع في أربع دول أوروبية (فرنسا ، السويد ، فنلندا ، إسبانيا) و5 مؤسسات للتعليم العالي (الجامعة اللبنانية، الجامعة اللبنانية الأمريكية، جامعة الروح القدس الكسليك، جامعة سيدة اللويزة، بالإضافة إلى جامعة البلمند) من لبنان. يهدف المشروع إلى تقييم الآثار الاجتماعية والبيئية لمعالجة مياه الصرف الصحي من خلال دراسات تحليل دورة الحياة، ونقل المعرفة من الشركاء الأوروبيين إلى الشركاء اللبنانيين، و صقل مهارات  المهندسين البيئيين والكيميائيين. ونتيجة لذلك، سيساعد الشركاء اللبنانيون أصحاب المصلحة اللبنانيين على اختيار أفضل تكنولوجيا لمعالجة مياه الصرف الصحي تهدف إلى إزالة الجسيمات أو المركبات المسببة للمشاكل بدلاً من تخفيفها بمجاري مياه الصرف الصحي السكنية. سيتم تدريب ما لا يقل عن 35 طالبًا و85 عضوًا من أعضاء هيئة التدريس من الجامعات اللبنانية في إطار هذا المشروع في جامعات الاتحاد الأوروبي.

كانت هذه هي المرة الأولى منذ بدء الاحتفال بErasmus Days في عام 2017 التي يقام فيها مثل هذا الاحتفال في لبنان. استقطب الاحتفال، الذي أقيم في الحرم الجامعي الرئيسي لجامعة البلمند في الكورة، أكثر من 80 طالبًا في المرحلة الثانوية شاركوا  في سلسلة من الجلسات التفاعلية والمحاضرات والألعاب والمسابقات التي ركزت جميعها على تكرير المياه و معالجتها بشكل مستدام.

في كلمته الترحيبية، أكد نائب رئيس الجامعة للعلاقات الدولية والشؤون المحلية وعميد كلية الهندسة البروفيسور رامي عبود التزام الجامعة بدورها كمنارة للأمل في الأوقات العصيبة. وشدد على دور برنامج مثل برنامج Erasmus في التقريب بين العالم والعمل من أجل الصالح العام. كما أشاد بجهود فريق مشروع SWaTH مؤكداً على أهمية قضية تكرير المياه ومعالجتها بشكل مستدام. كما رحب البروفيسورعبود  بالضيوف المشاركين في مشروع SWaTH من لبنان وأوروبا.

بدوره، سلط منسق مكتب Erasmus+ الوطني في لبنان ، الدكتور عارف الصوفي، الضوء على الأثر الذي أحدثته مشاريع Erasmus+ على مر السنين مؤكداً على التاريخ الطويل للتعاون الناجح مع جامعة البلمند. وأشاد بجهود فريق SWaTH.

 تحدث د. مكرم البشواتي، مدير مشروع SWaTH وأستاذ مساعد في قسم الهندسة الكيميائية في جامعة البلمند، عن مشروع SWaTH. سلط الدكتور البشواتي الضوء على أهداف وغايات المشروع ، وأثنى على جهود متطوعي الصليب الأحمر اللبناني ، وأشاد بتعاون وزارة الصحة العامة اللبنانية ، وربط المشروع بالموضوع الرئيسي لليوم "إدارة مياه الصرف الصحي".

 بعد الجلسة الافتتاحية، قدم شركاء مشروع SWaTH عروض تقديمية موجزة خلال ما أطلق عليه "جلسة المفاهيم". هدفت الجلسة إلى تعريف الجمهور بالجوانب المختلفة لإدارة المياه  ومجالات تأثيرها المختلفة. وأعقب ذلك سلسلة من الأنشطة  في مباني كلية الهندسة. تضمنت هذه الأنشطة جولات على مختبرات الكلية المختلفة ، والمسابقات ، والأنشطة الأخرى التي ساهم فيها عدد من الطلاب المتطوعين من الجامعة. واختتم الحدث بمسابقة علمية تناولت مختلف المواضيع التي تم التطرق لها خلال النهار.
