St. Phocas Church

St. Phocas church built on a small hill in Amioun town, Koura, North of Lebanon. It hosts mural icons from the crusader period. It was badly damaged due to an earthquake that occurred in the area in October 1918, in which the apse was the most damaged. With the passage of time and due to natural factors, the frescoes of the church have become damaged and barely recognized, and the church’s inner and outer walls have deteriorated.
The Digital Humanities Center aimed to create a 3D model and to produce a digital restoration of the church to keep a record of this heritage. This project is examined as a pilot one to identify the techniques and technologies needed to achieve the set goals.
The project’s phases included a detailed study of the church (history, archeology/architecture, and frescos), capturing high resolution photos of the church and its environment (architectural elements and iconography), making maps, drawings, and illustrations, and producing a digital restoration of the frescos and the inner and outer walls.
