Medical Laboratory Sciences

The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees: the former leads to a Bachelor of Science, and there are Master of Science degrees in Clinical Laboratory Sciences and a Professional Masters in Laboratory Management respectively.
 
 

BS in Clinical Laboratory Sciences

The Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences at the Faculty of Health Sciences offers a three-year Undergraduate programt that leads to a Bachelor of Science. The multidisciplinary nature of the program allows students to cover a broad range of subjects, whilst gaining both theoretical knowledge in the classroom and practical hands-on experience in the laboratory in a wide variety of laboratory techniques.

Students are exposed to a multiphase curriculum that provides knowledge in basic sciences, clinical pathology, microbiology, haematology, clinical chemistry, humanities, management, principles of research, and epidemiology and biostatistics. In addition to laboratory training, students are trained to analyze laboratory test results as an essential step in the process of diagnosis and patient care.

The Program is available at the Achrafieh campus in partnership with St. George Hospital University Medical Center, Souk el Gharb Campus, and the Main Campus, where students conduct their training in collaboration with hospitals located in the north of Lebanon.

Pre-Medical Track
Students who consider the option of a medical career can choose to enroll in a Pre-Medical Track. This gives students the opportunity to complete premedical courses in three years (101 credits), train for the MCAT, and be eligible to apply to Medical School, alongside their BS in Medical Laboratory Sciences.


Undergraduate Program Mission
The mission of the program is to improve the health of the community by educating students to become resourceful, multidisciplinary, competent, and ethical individuals in the field of medical laboratory sciences. The program is committed to educational excellence by providing students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to fulfill current and future professional roles and leadership positions as members of the healthcare team. Students are prepared to pursue advanced studies and careers in the academia and different industries. In addition, the program is dedicated to expanding knowledge and improving scientific thinking through research and investigation.


Undergraduate Program Learning Objectives
The BS in Medical Laboratory Sciences will meet the following objectives to accomplish its mission:

  • - Give students an in-depth theoretical understanding of different subjects in Clinical Laboratory Sciences.

  • - Provide hands-on laboratory experiences with the opportunity to explore conventional and new methods in the field of Medical Laboratory Sciences.

  • - Provide students with experiential learning in the different laboratory medicine department sections.

  • - Educate students to develop professional conduct and develop the highest standards of ethics.

  • - Assist students in developing problem-solving abilities and research skills.

Upon graduation, graduates will be able to:

  • - Perform accurate and specialized routine tests on human and non-human samples.

  • - Analyze and interpret medical laboratory data.

  • - Meet the requirements necessary to pass the Lebanese Medical Laboratory Colloquium.

Laboratory Internship

The internship is a professional training and experience in an actual laboratory setting. It is an essential course in the degree that aims to extend and widen the scope of knowledge and operational/adaptive skills of students by exposing them to “real-time” situations and challenges within the context of organizations/entities involved with addressing needs related to laboratories and the management.


Learning Objectives
The Professional Internship allows students to:

  • - Experience real-time operational settings, function as a member of a team and appreciate dynamics within the context of their host organization.

  • - Be exposed to tasks and activities performed by practitioners involved in budgeting, finance, human resources, and marketing in laboratory management settings.

  • - Be exposed to decision-making and administrative processes and develop interpersonal skills.

  • - Expand their professional and social networks and develop more evident perspectives of their needs, interests, and concerns.

After Graduation
A career in Medical Laboratory Sciences combines an aptitude for science with the desire to help others. Laboratory scientists are highly skilled professionals who can begin their professional careers working in a medical laboratory, in acute care, or community hospitals, or in pharmacy and pharmaceutical industries.

Experienced Laboratory Sciences graduates have many career options. This includes clinics, private laboratories, research laboratories, public health agencies, and NGOs. Positions within the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries are also an option.

Our highly competitive graduates can apply for a Master’s program (graduate studies). Graduates can also pursue higher education in medicine, clinical laboratory sciences, public health or graduate studies in biomedical sciences or related disciplines.




MS in Clinical Laboratory Sciences

The Faculty of Health Sciences offers a two-year graduate program leading to a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences. The Program provides an advanced level of education and training for candidates with a background in medical laboratory sciences as well as basic science or biomedical sciences.

The program offers two tracks for specialization: Clinical Microbiology and Immunology, Diagnostic Molecular Biology.

MS Clinical Laboratory Sciences Program Mission
The mission of the program is educating professional scientists to contribute in research in the areas of microbiology, immunology and molecular biology at both national and international levels.


Program Learning Objectives
The MS in Clinical Laboratory Sciences will meet the following objectives to accomplish its mission:
  • - Provide students with theoretical and practical skills in molecular biology, clinical microbiology and immunology using classical techniques and modern technology.

  • - Formulate and implement a research scheme designed to test an original hypothesis related to a research project.

  • - Develop student’s skills for conducting in-depth research, gathering data, writing extensive literature reviews, and making accurate conclusions.

  • - Analyze and interpret research data, present and debate relevance of findings to the general field of interest.

  • - Equip students with necessary skills for a successful career in hospitals, pharmaceutical industries, and academia.

Upon graduation, graduates will be able to:
  • - Perform accurate laboratory testing and experiments in microbiology, immunology and molecular biology.

Professional Master Degree in Laboratory Sciences

The Faculty of Health Sciences offers a two-year graduate program leading to a Professional Master degree in Laboratory Sciences with a Laboratory Management focus.

Students develop enhanced problem-solving abilities and capacities to function more actively in Laboratory Management through supervised professional training in an actual laboratory setting. The internship provides the students with hands-on training in lab finance and budgeting, implementation of quality management, database and information systems, and management skills; as well as developing personal managerial and leadership skills.

To be eligible for admission to the program, candidates should have completed a Bachelor of Science in Medical Laboratory Sciences or Biology or a related discipline.

Program Mission
The mission of the program is to prepare students for leadership positions in laboratory management. By engaging graduates in multidisciplinary internships, students are positioned to become effective managers in health and industrial organizations.

The Professional Master degree in Laboratory Management will meet the following objectives to accomplish its mission:

  • - Strengthen students’ understanding and administrative skills in quality assurance, quality improvement and laboratory management.

  • - Provide students with in-depth knowledge in human resources, marketing, budgeting and healthcare management.

  • - Familiarize students with various information and database management systems.

  • - Provide students with opportunities to conduct training in various healthcare and industrial settings with high standards of professionalism.

Upon graduation, graduates will be able to:

  • - Develop laboratory policies, rules, and regulations.

  • - Develop managerial skills to effectively supervise and evaluate laboratory personnel.

After Graduation
The Professional Master degree in Laboratory Management will enable graduates to assume leadership roles in management, research, technology, disease surveillance and education in the field of Laboratory Medicine.



Laboratory Facilities

The Medical Laboratory Sciences laboratories at Ashrafieh Campus and Main Campus are reinforced by a strong and diverse team with experience in the following areas: Toxicology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Clinical Chemistry, Immunology and Biotechnology. Teaching laboratory sessions are an integral part of basic, as well as clinically oriented courses.

At FHS Achrafieh campus, the Faculty has 3 laboratory facilities: the Biology laboratory, Chemistry laboratory and the Cell Culture Unit. Each laboratory facility offers controlled conditions in which lab courses and scientific research may be performed. The laboratories in the Faculty of Health Science and the Saint Georges Hospital University Medical Center are multidisciplinary; they are designed and equipped to cope with all the experiments that are carried out as part of the curricular requirements. The settings meet the needs of essential laboratory research work. On the Main campus, the creation of two new FHS multidisciplinary laboratories (Biology and Chemistry) ensures the implementation of all MLS laboratory sessions currently established at the FHS Achrafieh campus. In addition, these multidisciplinary laboratories are available to all graduate students in Clinical Laboratory Sciences for their research projects.

Undergraduate students benefit from laboratory sessions associated with different courses such as biology, microbiology, phlebotomy, bacteriology, parasitology, clinical chemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology, clinical genetics, basic chemistry and organic chemistry.

Graduate students have the opportunity to carry out primary research in the laboratories, under the supervision of their academic advisor.

Graduate students benefit from the following equipment and utilities to conduct their research: Thermal cycler and RT-PCR machine, Refrigerated centrifuges, Distilled Water Supply System, Spectrophotometers such as Nanodrop, Protein Blotting unit, Multi-plate Reader, Shaker Incubator, cell disruption unit, Air Clean workstation, Cryopreservation unit, Autoclave machine. Graduate students can also conduct in vitro experiments in the Cell culture unit.
