Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Sugery

Mission
The Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program aims to graduate residents with a comprehensive medical knowledge base, clinical expertise, technical competence, and self-education skills in preparation for a clinical or academic practice in Otolaryngology.

Objectives
The Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program aims to graduate residents that fulfill the following competencies in medical education:
  • - Medical knowledge:
    Residents will recognize the surgically relevant anatomy of the Head and Neck and the science related to the pathophysiology, pathology, and treatment of the ear, nose, and throat disorders.
  • - Patient care:
    Residents will provide an appropriate, effective, and compassionate patient care.
  • - Interpersonal and communication skills:
    Residents will demonstrate effective communication with patients, their families, and professional associates in the patient care team.
  • - Practice-based learning and improvement:
    Residents will be able to learn and use the appropriate information resources to optimize patient care.
  • - Systems-based practice:
    Residents will be able to learn the basic resources available for the care and safety of ear, nose, and throat patients.
  • - Professionalism:
    Residents will demonstrate respect, compassion, and integrity in their practice.
Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of their training, residents are expected to:
  1. Conduct a medical history and perform a physical examination that is appropriate for the ear, nose, and throat clinical problem.
  2. Develop a differential diagnosis and treatment plan for patients with ear, nose, and throat medical or surgical problem.
  3. Acquire the ear, nose, and throat technical skills necessary for operation performance and postoperative follow-up.
  4. Perform pre-operative and post-operative assessment and management of the patient undergoing ear, nose, and throat surgical procedures.
  5. Recognize the characteristics and management of complications associated with Head and Neck surgery procedures.
  6. Demonstrate appropriate clinical decision-making skills.
  7. Describe the pathophysiology, pathology, and the principles of medical and surgical treatment of Tumors of the Head and Neck.
  8. Apply universal safety precautions.
  9. Participate in General surgery Grand Rounds and in Case Review Conferences.
  10. Promote continuous self-learning.
