Mission
The General Surgery Residency Program prepares residents to become competent and compassionate general surgeons who, upon completion of their training, will demonstrate the advanced level of surgical performance that is expected of a specialist.

Objectives
The General Surgery Residency Program aims to graduate residents that fulfill the following competencies in medical education:
  • - Medical knowledge:
    Residents will acquire a strong knowledge base in the basic and clinical science of general surgery.
  • - Patient care:
    Residents will develop a compassionate and responsible attitude with patients and their families.
  • - Interpersonal and communication skills:
    Residents will demonstrate the use of effective listening skills and the ability to engage in a dialogue with patients, their families, and professional associates in the patient care team.

    Residents will demonstrate the ability to critically analyze, evaluate, and incorporate surgical literature into patient care.

    Residents will learn the ability to use resources available in the healthcare system to optimize patient care.

By the end of their training, residents are expected to:

  2. Evaluate surgical patients and identify surgical problems.

  4. Demonstrate skills in surgical techniques to master operative and non-operative procedures essential for a competent practice in general surgery.
  5. Recognize, diagnose, and treat common surgical emergencies.
  6. Recognize, diagnose, and treat postoperative complications.
  7. Develop a differential diagnosis and treatment plan for surgical patients.

B. Neurosurgery

Mission
The Neurosurgery Residency Program aims to train residents to master the neurosurgical technical and diagnostic skills in preparation for a competent clinical or academic practice and an exemplary patient care.

Objectives
The Neurosurgery Residency Program aims to graduate residents that fulfill the following competencies in medical education:
  • - Medical knowledge:
    Residents will acquire an in-depth knowledge of the basic and clinical science of Neurology and Neurosurgery.
  • - Patient care:
    Residents will provide a supportive and compassionate patient care.
  • - Interpersonal and communication skills:
    Residents will demonstrate leadership and effective participation in the health care team.
  • - Practice-based learning and improvement:
    Residents will learn to analyze and evaluate their own practices in order to improve their surgical proficiency.
  • - Systems-based practice:
    Residents will demonstrate an understanding of the effectiveness of resources within the healthcare system to provide optimal neurosurgical patient care.
  • - Professionalism:
    Residents will demonstrate an understanding of the ethical and legal aspects of Neurosurgery.

C. Cardiothoracic Surgery

Mission
The mission of the Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program is to train residents to become competent cardiothoracic surgeons with high level of performance.

Objectives
The Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program aims to graduate residents that fulfill the following competencies in medical education:
  • - Medical knowledge:
    Residents will recognize the surgically relevant anatomy and understand the pathophysiology basis for the cardiothoracic surgical disease.
  • - Patient care:
    Residents will provide an appropriate and effective surgical patient care.
  • - Interpersonal and communication skills:
    Residents will demonstrate effective communication with patients, families, and health professionals in the patient care team.
  • - Practice-based learning and improvement:
    Residents will be able to analyze and evaluate the scientific and medical literature to address their learning needs and optimize patient care.
  • - Systems-based practice:
    Residents will demonstrate an understanding of the triage and referral of patients with cardiothoracic surgical disease.
  • - Professionalism:
    Residents will demonstrate professional behavior in their practice and ensure patient confidentiality and privacy.

D. Urology

Mission
The Urology Residency Program is designed to develop competent clinicians and surgeons through extensive clinical experience, expertise in technical surgical procedures, scholarly activities, professional attitude, and compassionate patient care.

Objectives
The Urology Residency Program aims to graduate residents that fulfill the following competencies in medical education:
  • - Medical knowledge:
    Residents will demonstrate knowledge of the basic and clinical science relevant to the diagnosis and management of urologic disease.
  • - Patient care:
    Residents will provide an effective, respectful, and compassionate care for patients with urologic disease.
  • - Interpersonal and communication skills:
    Residents will use effective listening and explanatory skills with patients, their families, and professional associates in the patient care team.
  • - Practice-based learning and improvement:
    Residents will participate in Urology scholarly activities and apply the knowledge learned to patient care.
  • - Systems-based practice:
    Residents will demonstrate an understanding about patient referral, schedule, and surgical intervention.

  1. Acquire the clinical and basic science knowledge of etiology and management of urologic disease in all domains of male and female adult and pediatric Urology.
  2. Conduct a complete urologic history and perform a physical examination that is appropriate for evaluation of a Urology problem.
  3. Develop an appropriate differential diagnosis and treatment plan for patients with medical or surgical Urology problems.
  4. Acquire Urology surgical skills necessary for operation performance and postoperative follow-up.
  5. Perform pre-operative and post-operative assessment and management of patients undergoing Urology surgical procedures.
  6. Recognize the characteristics and management of adverse events associated with Urology surgery procedures.
  7. Demonstrate appropriate clinical decision-making skills.
  8. Apply universal safety precautions.
  9. Participate in General surgery Grand Rounds and in Case Review Conferences.

E. Vascular Surgery

Mission
The mission of the Vascular Surgery Residency Program is to prepare residents to attain expertise in the fundamentals of vascular disease and to equip them with the technical skills to become competent consultants in vascular surgery.

Objectives
The Vascular Surgery Residency Program aims to graduate residents that fulfill the following competencies in medical education:
  • - Medical knowledge:
    Residents will acquire the basic, clinical, and technical knowledge necessary to function as medical experts in vascular surgery.
  • - Patient care:
    Residents will develop manual dexterity appropriate for the patient care plan.
  • - Interpersonal and communication skills:
    Residents will demonstrate the ability to counsel and educate patients and their families.
  • - Practice-based learning and improvement:
    Residents will demonstrate the ability to critically analyze and evaluate vascular literature to practice evidence-based medicine.
  • - Systems-based practice:
    Residents will demonstrate an understanding of the role of different medical experts and health care professionals in the overall patient management.

    Residents will adhere to the ethical principles of their profession and will demonstrate a commitment to continuity of patient care.

  6. Evaluate the indications, contraindications, and possible adverse effects of interventional vascular procedures.
  7. Discuss the indications and contraindications of commonly performed diagnostic imaging studies.
  8. Develop management strategies for patients with chronic vascular disease.
  9. Demonstrate appropriate clinical decision-making skills.

F. Plastic Surgery

Mission
The Plastic Surgery Residency Program aims to develop competent plastic surgeons that can provide outstanding and compassionate clinical care and can make a sound ethical and legal judgment.

Objectives
The Plastic Surgery Residency Program aims to graduate residents that fulfill the following competencies in medical education:
  • - Medical knowledge:
    Residents will develop the technical skills necessary to become competent consultants in plastic surgery.
  • - Patient care:
    Residents will develop manual dexterity appropriate for the patient care plan.
  • - Interpersonal and communication skills:
    Residents will demonstrate the ability to effectively exchange information with patients and their families and professional associates.
  • - Practice-based learning and improvement:
    Residents will appraise and integrate scientific evidence to improve patient care practices. Systems-based practice:
    Residents will demonstrate the ability to collaborate with health care professionals to achieve the best possible outcome for patients.

Pediatric Surgery

Mission
The mission of the Pediatric Surgery Residency Program is the production of knowledgeable, competent, and compassionate pediatric surgeons able to assist the surgically ill pediatric patients and to develop the effective communication skills and professional attitudes needed to deal with families of pediatric patients.

Objectives
The Pediatric Surgery Residency Program is committed to train surgical residents to become pediatric surgeons through the acquisition of theoretical knowledge and technical skills in neonatal and pediatric surgery.

Program Learning Outcomes
By the end of their training, residents are expected to:
  1. Diagnose, evaluate, and treat neonatal and pediatric surgical conditions.
  2. Diagnose, evaluate, and treat neonatal and pediatric surgical emergency room conditions.
  3. Discuss the potential complications of neonatal and pediatric surgical conditions.
  4. Diagnose, evaluate, and manage the potential complications of neonatal and pediatric surgical conditions.
  5. Demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills that result in effective information exchange with the parents of the pediatric patient and teaming with professional associates.
