Department of Languages and Translation

The department of language and translation prepares students to become professional translators. Through training in appropriate translation techniques, research methodologies, and other necessary skills, such as editing and reviewing, UOB students are prepared in accordance with professional international standards.

Why Languages and Translation as a Major?
Today, translators are in high demand. In the Gulf, our graduates who speak Arabic as a mother tongue and two or three other languages, are highly demanded, as translation into Arabic happens on a daily basis at all levels of communication.

Translators are also in high demand in Europe and the US where the knowledge of Arabic, French, Spanish along with English is considered a significant advantage at a time when the Arab region occupies an essential place in the geopolitics of the world.

The department offers regularly courses in Chinese, German, Russian and Greek.

NB: a minor in Spanish prepares students to take the DELE on cooperation with the Cervantes Institute.

Bachelor of Arts in Languages and Translation

Program Learning Objectives

  • - To train translators in various fields of human knowledge with a high level of proficiency in the three main languages of instruction: Arabic, English & French. In addition, a proficient command of a fourth foreign language such as Spanish, German, Greek or Chinese is desirable.

  • - To provide students with efficient translation techniques and methodologies from and into Arabic, French and English in the specialized fields of editorial translation, audio-visual translation (subtitling and dubbing), along with the appropriate and comprehensive theoretical background to enhance the translator’s skills and professional performance.


Program Learning Outcomes

Students should:

  1. - Possess excellent language skills allowing them to read, analyze and understand the source text in Arabic, French and English.

  2. - Convey source texts in the target languages using appropriate style and accurate terminology.

  3. - Understand basic concepts in translation theories.

  4. - Translate texts from different domains, and with various degrees of difficulties.

  5. - Acquire a translation technique enabling them to deal with different types of texts.

  6. - Use colloquial expressions and slangs in Arabic, French and English.

  7. - Acquire a general knowledge of current events.

  8. - Acquire a fourth language: Spanish, German, Greek or Chinese.



Diploma in Translation

Program Learning Objectives

  • - To train students in the fields of computer assisted translation (CAT), Localization and website translation.

  • - To train students in different fields of translation such as economic, legal, journalistic, scientific and technical.

  • - To keep the students updated with the latest job market trends and needs.

  • - To locate students in suitable internships.


Program Learning Outcomes

Students should:

  1. - Have the ability to carry out terminological research on specific topics in the field of economic, legal, medical or any other specialized translation.

  2. - Use new translation software and computer assisted translation tools.

  3. - Keep up with the latest topics and possess strong general knowledge and culture to catch the cultural references appearing in a text.

  4. - Adapt the meaning according to the target culture and reader.

  5. - Enhance translation competence and skills in the different domains of specialties (Scientific, technical and literary…) through translation classes and internship.

  6. - Build an internship report reflecting the gained experience.



Master of Arts in Languages and Translation

Program Objectives

  • - Improve the students’ theoretical knowledge in Translation Theories.

  • - Improve the students’ theoretical knowledge in Terminology.

  • - Promote the application of translation theories into different kinds of texts.

  • - Develop analytical skills and enhance critical thinking.

  • - Provide students with the necessary know-how and tools to be able to carry out research and write a master thesis.


Program Learning Outcomes

At the end of this program, students should:

  • - Acquire ability to find and analyze translation problematics.

  • - Enhance their ability to justify choices in translation.

  • - Participate in translation projects or research programs.

  • - Build a research project at the end of each seminar.

  • - Enhance their knowledge in Translation Theories.

  • - Do terminological research.

  • - Write a professional/research thesis.

  • - Write a thesis in Terminology.

After Graduation
After graduation, our graduates can fill various career position where professional translators are increasingly needed. Some areas in which professional translators regularly pursue careers are Legal Translation, Economic Translation, Ministries and Embassies, International Organizations and NGOs, Subtitling and Dubbing Companies, Tourism, Mass Media, Interpretation and Online Translation Services, and Teaching.
