Letter from the President

August 7, 2020

I wish I was able to address you in joyful words, to talk about a promising future at the start of the new academic year. Unfortunately, we are going from one disaster to another, and from one challenge to the next.

First, I would like to express my deep sympathy to our students, residents, attending physicians, nurses, and all the medical staff, who have suffered physical and emotional injuries, and to those who lost loved ones, as a result of this apocalyptic catastrophe. However, no matter how gloomy and devastating is the hardship we are going through, we will resist, persist and fulfill our mission; a mission defined through education and refined through ethics and morality. This mission will never perish, and definitely will never change.

In view of this unprecedented damage to our beloved Saint George Hospital, we have to hold hands and maintain a unanimous effort to sustain our academic program along with delivering the humanitarian support to our people.

Rest assured that we will work relentlessly to keep the functionality of our medical programs even if it is temporarily disrupted due to the destruction inflicted on the premises of SGH.

Stay Safe and May God bless you all.

Admissions to the Fall 2020 Semester

April 8, 2020

With this global pandemic, the coronavirus preventive measures taken have been hindering students from taking the SAT, a necessary test for admittance into most faculties at the University of Balamand.
The College Board has cancelled, so far, the SAT sessions worldwide including that of May 2020.
Accordingly, the University of Balamand has decided to evaluate prospective applicants for admissions to Fall 2020 that were unable to take the SAT exam based on their High School grades and Language Aptitude Tests.

This measure has been exceptionally adopted by the University for this Fall 2020 admissions.

To apply online, click on the following link:
http://apply.balamand.edu.lb

Applicants to the University may wish also to apply for financial aid at the same time. The decisions on completed Financial Aid applications will be released after two weeks from receiving the acceptance decisions.

You may download the Financial Aid application at the following link:
http://www.balamand.edu.lb/FinancialAidApplication/

N.B. If you have not taken yet any international language test, the Office of Admissions will be contacting you in this regard.

Message from the President

March 30, 2020

Dear beloved UOB Students, It is definitely one of the hardest times that we are going through, as a country in general and as an academic institution in particular.
We, whether students, staff, faculty, or administration, are all facing major existential challenges, but we should strongly collaborate to save our academic year, and prevent any possible damages to our graduating students.

After considering all options, and as promised, we have reached the most plausible, practical, and fair solution for our grading policy, to be implemented exceptionally for the Spring Semester of 2020. This Policy will basically follow a Pass/No Pass, as well as Numerical grades, with the possibility of having projects replacing final exams in some of the Faculties.

All the above will be detailed in the attached document.

For any concerns, comments, or suggestions, you can address your corresponding faculty member who will be willing to help. Stay safe.

Message from the President

March 27, 2020

Dear Members of the UOB Community,

It is definitely one of the most challenging times that we are experiencing at all levels: academic, economic, and personal safety. However, it is only in those existential times that creative minds can make a difference. The tremendous and relentless effort of a group of our University staff, students, and friends of UOB, has yielded an innovative approach to create a solution for online exam processes, as well as a genuine guideline for helping in the struggle against the COVID-19 foe.

As once eloquently said by Tom Freston: “Innovation is taking two things that exist and putting them together in a new way”. Having said that, you should know that the University of Balamand has been developing and testing many platforms to salvage the academic year for our students while maintaining exam integrity at the same time. In that perspective, we acquired and tested Respondus for online exams on the 8th, 9th and 24th of March 2020, respectively. It is now fully integrated with Moodle, and the first exam using this software was carried out today, Friday 27 March 2020.

This online proctoring service restricts students from accessing programs and applications until they complete the exam. They are video-monitored through their PCs’ webcams. Using video analytics and artificial intelligence, patterns and anomalies associated with unauthorized activities are automatically detected and flagged. In addition to the above system, the GIS Center at the Faculty of Engineering also designed an innovative approach to live track the geographic location of students to ensure no near proximity while taking the exam. The integration of location intelligence and online proctoring solution is considered a pioneering approach, unique to the University of Balamand, which will ensure the highest level of integrity in non-proctored exams.

Another urgent concern is the grading system for the spring semester. On that matter, I want to assure all our students that the decision will be based on their best interest, and it will be announced by early next week.

Finally, I would like to conclude with a pledge to never allow negative thoughts nor detrimental events to drain our energy. “Instead of worrying about what we cannot control, let’s shift our energy to what we can create” (Roy T. Bennet). Let us work hand in hand for a better future, a better country, and a better life.

Stay safe and God bless you all.

I take this opportunity to extend my warm wishes to all UOB mothers and the mothers of all staff, students and faculty members.

March 14, 2020

Dear Members of the Balamandian Community,

In view of the uncertainty in assessing the gravity and the extent of spreading of the COVID-19 epidemic, we, as university governance, have the obligation to keep the premises locked down for the safety of all.

Accordingly, the University of Balamand will remain physically closed for the coming week, extending from Monday March 16th till Sunday March 22nd. We will be nonetheless fully functional through the online teaching modalities and virtual classrooms throughout these unique challenging days.

The physical access to UOB Campuses will be restricted to Faculty, Staff, and students with valid reasons and special permission from the corresponding Deans and Directors.

As I always say, exceptional times need exceptional people. I believe you are all exceptionally talented to attend to your obligations and to fulfill your duties.

Dear Balamandians,

I just want to let you know how much, me and all your teaching faculty, are proud of seeing you developing your thoughts, expressing your patriotic beliefs, and insisting on renovating Lebanon, a Lebanon that we feel proud belonging to.

As I have repeatedly announced, you are the clean, noble, and creative building blocks of the Lebanon that we have always dreamt to live in.

Having said that, I wanted to share with you a follow-up note on what we discussed yesterday:
  1. The remote teaching possibility has been tried successfully with the MED II students and we are planning to make it available for students and faculty members who are unable to be physically present at UOB.
  2. Most of the teaching material is in the process of being posted on Moodle to facilitate its access to students.
  3. Accommodation facilities are made available for students and faculty members coming from distant areas, in order to spare them the hassle of the horrible traffic and to ensure their safety.
  4. All students who were unable to attend their classes will be assisted in making up for the teaching material that they have missed, in coordination with the concerned faculty members.

At the end, I would like to emphasize once again that I am extremely proud of you all, seeing the level of responsibility and patriotism that you have explicitly expressed during our discussions yesterday.

With my sincere regards to all,

In view of the uncertainty of the current situation, and keeping your safety as our primordial priority, the University of Balamand will remain closed on Friday November 1st, 2019.

Rest assured that salvaging your semester and ensuring the continuity of your academic year is and will always be our major concern, after your safety.

Along that perspective, several options are being considered by the University administration, in coordination with all concerned Faculty Members, to safeguard your academic interests.

Message from the President

October 27, 2019
Time: 4:45 p.m.

Dear UOB Students, Staff, and Faculty Members,

I do not want to repeat myself in glorifying what you have been doing for the past ten days. I cannot but admire your achievements, your feeling of social responsibility, and your vision for the future. This future is being sculpted by your sweating hands, embellished by the creativity of your spirits, and pushed to completion by your patience and persistence.

To congratulate you on what you are establishing will be underestimating your deeds. I believe you are creating your prosperous future by cracking the corrupt present, and learning from the shameful past. I cannot but encourage you to keep your faith in what you believe, remain immune to all corrupting temptations, and exercise your responsible patriotism as it is shown, loud and clear, shining to the world.

Your University will be always supporting you and your beliefs, and we will always be responsible to protect your future as you dream of it. Stay prudent in your acts, responsible in your demands, and faithful to your beliefs.

Best regards and stay safe.
