Your Beatitude, Patriarch John X (the tenth), Patriarch of Antioch and all the East for the Greek Orthodox,

Your Eminences,

Reverend Fathers,

Honorable Professors and all members of the Saint Irenaeus Joint Orthodox-Catholic Working Group,

Distinguished guests,

It is with great pleasure and profound honor that I stand here today to welcome you as the President of the University of Balamand. We gather here on this momentous occasion to commemorate the impact of a landmark event that occurred almost three decades ago—the signing of the Balamand Declaration in 1993.

As we reflect on the significance of this historic declaration, we are reminded of the power of dialogue, understanding, and the pursuit of unity amid diversity.

Through the Balamand Declaration, the Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church demonstrated that it is possible to engage in meaningful dialogue, overcome differences, and seek common ground. This landmark agreement emphasized the importance of dialogue as a means to address theological, historical, and social challenges, and to promote a culture of peace and reconciliation.

As University of Balamand, an institution founded on the values of academic excellence, tolerance, and interfaith dialogue, we are proud to be a part of this meaningful occasion. Our University has long been a proponent of fostering understanding and embracing diversity. We believe in the transformative power of education to nurture minds, bridge divides, and build bonds of empathy and compassion.

We, at the University of Balamand, pledge to continue the journey of mutual understanding, cooperation, and respect, not only within our academic community but also within the wider world.

It is my sincere hope that this assessment of the Balamand Declaration will serve as a catalyst for further progress and strengthened ties among communities. May it inspire us to deepen our engagement, participate in meaningful dialogue, and work together for the advancement of humanity.

In conclusion, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed to the realization of this important event. Your presence here today signifies your commitment to the values of unity, peace, and mutual understanding. We are hopeful that such meetings will work towards a future where our differences are celebrated, our commonalities are cherished, and our shared humanity unites us.

I will end with a quote from Saint Matthew 12:25: "Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and no city or house divided against itself will stand."

Thank you, and God bless.
