Rand Semaan, a Political Science and International Affairs student at the University of Balamand (UOB), was selected among 40 students from Lebanon to participate in the Twelfth Course in International Humanitarian Law. This course was organized by the Directorate of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights in the Lebanese Army, in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross, and was dedicated to university students.

The course took place from July 18th to July 24th, 2023, at the Fouad Chehab Academy for Command and General Staff in Baabda. It concluded with a graduation ceremony on July 25th attended by Brigadier General Omar Maglad, representing General Joseph Aoun, the Commander of the Lebanese Army, and Brigadier General Al-Raken Ziad Rizqallah, the course president. Numerous military leaders and officials were present, along with Dr. Hanna Al Nakat, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at UOB, and many parents.

Reflecting on her experience, Rand said, "I am proud to have participated in such a transformative experience, which will undoubtedly enhance our commitment to humanitarian principles. Thank you to everyone involved for making this opportunity possible."

The aim of the course was to simplify and explain international humanitarian law, covering its origins and highlighting the process of its implementation. It provided an excellent training opportunity for students interested in the legal field, as the Directorate of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights in the army is committed to delivering the course using the simplest and most effective methods.
