FOE-Chemical Engineering International Advisory Board Meeting at the Faculty of Engineering

In preparation for the Academic Year 2024/2025, the University of Balamand's Faculty of Engineering (FOE) successfully hosted the 2024 Chemical Engineering International Advisory Board meeting on July 25 th at the FOE Koura Campus Branch. This significant gathering brought together the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Professor Rami Abboud, members of the Chemical Engineering Department, and 12 respected key industry representatives holding top managerial positions in their respective companies. What sets this advisory board apart is its unmatched breadth and influence, standing as the largest of its kind among universities in Lebanon.

The FOE-Chemical Engineering International Advisory Board 2024/2025 consists of the following esteemed members:

The meeting started with a warm welcome by the Advisory Board Chair, Dr. Jean Claude Assaf, who holds the position of Associate Professor at the department. Dr. Assaf introduced each board member especially the new members before passing the floor to Professor Abboud who emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties between academia and industry to enhance the quality of education and ensure that graduates are well-prepared for the professional world.

Dr. Jane Estephane extended a warm welcome to all the board members and provided a comprehensive overview of the significant developments and achievements within the Chemical Engineering Department over the past year ahead of the ABET re-accreditation event in November 2024. During the meeting, Dr. Wael Hamd and Dr. Makram Bachawaty, both esteemed Associate Professors in the department, presented their ongoing industry-collaborative projects, highlighting the innovative approaches and potential impact of their respective teams. Each member of the board then had the chance to give a small introduction about the company they work in and the duties they hold.

The first agenda item provided a comprehensive update on the department's recent achievements, ongoing projects, and plans. The updates highlighted the department's commitment to academic excellence, research advancements, and industry collaboration.

The meeting then focused on exploring new collaboration initiatives between the university and industry partners. These initiatives aim to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship that enhances both educational outcomes and industrial innovation.

A key agenda item was the discussion on curriculum development and its alignment with industry needs. Industry representatives shared insights into the evolving demands of the Chemical Engineering sector, emphasizing the skills and knowledge required for future engineers. This dialogue is instrumental in ensuring that the curriculum remains relevant, up-to-date and comprehensive, equipping students with the expertise needed to excel in their engineering careers.

The board also addressed a main topic that revolves around student internship and employment opportunities, recognizing the importance of practical experience in shaping successful engineers. Strategies to increase internship placements and employment rates for graduates were discussed, with industry partners expressing their commitment to providing more opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience.

The meeting concluded with a review of the committee bylaws and the Program Educational Objectives (PEOs). The review aimed to ensure that these objectives are aligned with the department's goals and the evolving needs of the industry. By revisiting and refining these foundational elements, the board reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining a high standard of education and producing graduates who are well-equipped to meet the challenges of the chemical engineering field.

Vice President for Internationalization and Engagement and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Professor Rami Abboud commended the efforts of Dr. Assaf and all members of the Professional Advisory Board stating that this meeting underscored the faculty’s commitment to fostering strong industry-academia partnerships and collaborations. The collective spirit and shared commitment to excellence will contribute to the continued success and growth of the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Balamand.
