UOB Launches Primary Health Care Satellite Units to Support Vulnerable Communities

In a proactive response to the ongoing crisis in Lebanon, the University of Balamand is proud to announce the establishment of Primary Health Care Satellite Units (PSUs) supported by UNICEF and in coordination with the Ministry of Public Health. This initiative aims to enhance access to essential health services for individuals in conflict zones, internally displaced persons, and host communities.

The PSU program is designed to address the pressing health needs of those most affected by the crisis, offering a comprehensive range of services, including:
  1. Medical Support: Regular health check-ups and medical care for children and adults.
  2. Medication Support: Provision of necessary medications to those in need.
  3. Immunization Drives: Ensuring that all children receive vital vaccinations.
  4. Midwifery and Reproductive Health Care: Offering antenatal and postnatal care, along with sexual health services.
  5. Health Education: Educating parents and caregivers on child health and nutrition practices.
  6. Wound Management: Treating minor wounds with referrals to hospitals as necessary.
So far, 75 PSUs have been established, and the Department of Community Engagement (DOCE) at the University of Balamand has been instrumental in training 230 personnel, including community health workers, nurses, midwives, and general practitioners, to ensure the effective delivery of these services.

The establishment of the PSUs not only aims to improve health outcomes but also reinforces the university's role as a leader in public health initiatives, dedicated to fostering resilient communities in these challenging times.
