University of Balamand Collaborates on Comprehensive Assessment of Post-Conflict Damage in Lebanon

A joint publication by UN-Habitat Lebanon, the University of Balamand, and the Center for Environmental Research of the Eastern Mediterranean (CREEMO) at Saint Joseph University has unveiled critical findings on the impact of the recent conflict on Lebanon’s built environment. The comprehensive assessments, focusing on the South, Nabatiyeh, Bekaa, and Baalbek-Hermel governorates, utilize advanced satellite imagery and pre-conflict data to evaluate the scale of destruction and estimate debris quantities in severely affected areas.

Using high-resolution satellite imagery from September 2023 and December 2024 (or January 2025 for Baalbek-Hermel), the research identifies both total and partial building destruction, estimating the number of affected units and quantifying the debris generated. The findings provide a baseline for recovery efforts, aiding local and national authorities in developing sustainable debris management strategies and housing rehabilitation plans.

As Lebanon begins its long path to recovery, the collaboration between UN-Habitat Lebanon, the University of Balamand, and CREEMO represents a significant step toward understanding and addressing the aftermath of the conflict while laying the groundwork for effective and sustainable recovery strategies.
