UOB Hosts Awareness Session on Mediation as a Tool for Conflict Resolution

The University of Balamand's (UOB) Department of Political Science and International Affairs at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (PSIA), hosted an information and awareness session titled “From Pain to Hope” in partnership with March Lebanon on the role of mediation in resolving sectarian violence and inter-communal conflicts. The event, which took place on February 11, 2025, aimed to increase awareness of successful strategies to address sectarian tensions, particularly in light of Lebanon's current political and social challenges.

The session featured Mrs. Léa Baroudi, President and Founder of March Lebanon, who delivered a powerful speech on the importance of dialogue and understanding in overcoming entrenched societal divisions. She said, "If change were easy, no one would need to try," reflecting on the difficulties of initiating change.

The event also included eight live testimonies from individuals with direct experience of war and conflict, particularly from Tripoli. Former combatants and victims of terrorism shared their stories of transformation and reconciliation. Despite their histories of inter-communal hostility, these individuals have made significant strides toward accepting one another, promoting the message of tolerance and mutual respect.

Dr. Noura Assaf, Faculty Member at PSIA Department, opened the session stressing the importance of fostering unity and overcoming sectarian divisions in a time of regional instability. “This event is critical in reminding us of the power of dialogue and understanding,” said Dr. Assaf, highlighting the relevance of such initiatives in the current political climate. She added: "UOB is committed to equipping students with the tools to foster social awareness. Collaborating with civil society organizations like March Lebanon and with public sector institutions such as the Lebanese Armed Forces, bridges academic knowledge with practical solutions, creating impactful initiatives to address conflict and promote social cohesion."

Student feedback from the event reflected the deep impact it had on attendees. Many students expressed how the event inspired them to think beyond sectarian divides and to focus on cooperation and community-building instead of division and violence. Several highlighted the importance of understanding the root causes of conflicts and the need for practical, community-driven efforts in fostering sustainable peace. Students also acknowledged the power of personal testimonies and shared experiences in transforming attitudes and perceptions, emphasizing that reconciliation is possible even in the most divided societies.
