Celebrated Journalist Georges Salibi Highlights Press Challenges at Lecture Series

The Department of Political Science and International Affairs (PSIA) welcomed renowned news anchor and TV personality Georges Salibi as the third speaker in its annual 27-Minute Lecture Series on the 20th of February 2025. The event, designed to bring experts from diverse fields to campus, provided a platform for Mr. Salibi to address the critical challenges facing journalists in Lebanon and beyond, particularly in the context of war reporting and press freedom.

Mr. Salibi, a celebrated figure in Lebanese media, began his lecture by highlighting the dangers journalists face while covering conflict zones. He specifically referenced the recent war in Lebanon, during which several reporters were tragically targeted and killed by Israeli forces while carrying out their duties. “Journalists risk their lives to bring the truth to the public, yet they often operate without adequate protection or clear guidelines,” he stated. He emphasized the urgent need for international and local frameworks to safeguard reporters in conflict areas, ensuring their safety while they fulfill their vital role in informing the public.

In addition to the physical dangers, Mr. Salibi shed light on the pressures journalists face from political and ideological factions within Lebanon. He spoke about the lack of tolerance for differing viewpoints, which has led to journalists being targeted by militant groups and other actors who oppose their reporting. “In a country as politically polarized as Lebanon, journalists often find themselves caught in the crossfire, not just physically but also ideologically,” he explained. This environment of intimidation, he argued, undermines press freedom and discourages objective reporting.

Mr. Salibi’s lecture resonated deeply with the audience, sparking a discussion on the importance of protecting journalists and fostering a culture of tolerance for diverse perspectives. He called for greater solidarity among media professionals and stronger institutional support to ensure that journalists can work without fear of retribution.
