The Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) at the University of Balamand (UOB) hosted Dr. Tony Kahwaji, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies at Saint Joseph University of Beirut (Institut de Lettres Orientales - USJ) on the 3rd of March 2025, where he delivered a lecture titled "The Lost Identity Between the Real and the Digital" as part of the Arab 201 course, supervised by Dr. Dorine Nasr.
The event was attended by Professor Hanna Al Nakat, Dean of FAS, Dr. Maria Nasr, Chairperson of the Department of Languages and Translation, Dr. Fadia Alam Gemayyel, Director of USJ - North Campus, and Dr. Dorine Nasr, instructor of Arabic at UOB, along with students from the International School of Koura and their teachers, as well as students from UOB.
Dr. Maria Nasr opened the event with a warm welcome, followed by a speech from Professor Al Nakat in honor of Dr. Kahwaji. Dr. Dorine Nasr then delivered a speech introducing the guest.
Dr. Kahwaji's lecture addressed the issue of identity in the digital age, explaining how rapid technological transformations have made identity a dynamic and changing construct rather than a fixed entity. He highlighted the relationship between real identity, rooted in language, culture, and history, and virtual identity, which is formed in the digital space. Dr. Kahwaji raised questions about the impact of virtual worlds on redefining the self, noting that these concepts have become central in the modern era, especially in light of the technological and digital advancements the world is experiencing today.
Drawing on the works of Erik Erikson, Sherry Turkle, and Edgar Morin, Dr. Kahwaji illustrated how identity has become increasingly multifaceted and complex. He discussed the challenges of navigating multiple identities, the tension between authenticity and modernity, and potential risks such as identity fragmentation and alienation. He also explored strategies for balancing the real and the virtual to maintain a coherent sense of self.
The session concluded with an open dialogue between students and Dr. Kahwaji.

والدّكتورة فاديا علم الجميّل مديرة جامعة القدّيس يوسف، فرع الشّمال، وأستاذة
اللّغة العربيّة في جامعة البلمند الدّكتورة دورين نصر، وطلّاب الإنترناسيونال
سكول – الكورة، مع أساتذتهم الكرام، إضافة إلى طلّاب جامعة البلمند.
استهلّت الاحتفال الدّكتورة ماريا نصر مرحّبة بالضّيوف
الكرام. ثمّ ألقى عميد كلّيّة العلوم والآداب البروفسور حنّا النّكت كلمة وجدانيّة
ترحيبيّة بالدّكتور قهوجي. تلته كلمة شكر وترحيب وتعريف بالضّيف الكريم ألقتها الدّكتورة
دورين نصر.
بعدها كانت محاضرة للدّكتور قهوجي عالجت إشكاليّة
الهويّة في العصر الرّقميّ، مبيّنًة كيف أنّ التّحوّلات التّكنولوجيّة السّريعة قد
جعلت الهويّة بناء متغيّرًا ديناميًا لا كيانًا ثابتًا. وسلّطت الضّوء على موضوع العلاقة
بين الهويّة الواقعيّة المتجذّرة في اللّغة والثّقافة والتّاريخ، والهويّة
الافتراضيّة التي تتشكّل عبر الفضاء الرّقميّ، وطرحت تساؤلات حول مدى تأثير
العوالم الافتراضيّة في إعادة تعريف الذّات، مشيرة إلى أنّ هذه المفاهيم باتت
محوريّة في العصر الحديث، خصوصًا في ظلّ التّقدّم التّكنولوجيّ والرّقميّ الذي
يعيشه العالم اليوم.
واستندت المقاربة إلى أعمال مفكّرين مثل إريك إريكسون
وشيري توركل وإدغار موران، موضحة كيف أنّ الهويّة أصبحت متعدّدة ومركّبة ومتحوّلة،
فركّزت على التّحدّيات التي تطرأ نتيجة هذه الهويّات المتعدّدة والصّراع بين
الأصالة والمعاصرة، فناقشت المخاطر المحتملة مثل تفتّت الهويّة والاغتراب، وطرحت
تساؤلات حول كيفيّة تحقيق توازن بين الواقعيّ والافتراضيّ للحفاظ على هويّة
متماسكة في العصر الرّقميّ.
واختُتم اللّقاء بحوار مفتوح بين الطّلّاب والدّكتور
قهوجي حول موضوع المحاضرة.
